Tehran (IP)- The British prime minister has been hit by a wave of resignations, with one in five MPs with government roles quitting since Tuesday.

Iran PressEurope: Boris Johnson is threatened by Conservative rebels who want to change party rules to allow another no-confidence vote on him.

He survived such a vote last month, and under the rules, as they currently stand, he would be immune from another challenge for a year. But ministers continue to resign, with more Tory backbenchers turning against him.

They quit within minutes on Tuesday, following a row over Johnson's decision to appoint Chris Pincher deputy chief whip earlier this year.

Their departures have triggered a wave of further resignations, with Kemi Badenoch, Alex Burghart, Neil O'Brien, Julia Lopez, and Alex Burghart among the latest.

Tory party bosses on the executive of the backbench 1922 committee are also meeting as questions over Mr. Johnson's future continue to swirl.

Johnson's premiership has been plunged into crisis following the dramatic resignations of Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid.

Sajid Javid has said he cannot "risk my integrity" by continuing to defend the government, telling Boris Johnson "enough is enough."
